Farmer Jen

Well, I think that I have bitten off more than I can chew with my whole garden plan. Last year the boys and I planted some tomatoes and a cucumber in a 3 ft x 3 ft space. This year I had much bigger dreams, an 8ft x 16 ft plot and hey why don't we start everything from seed! So off went the order to Burpee's and over to borrow the neighbor's tiller. We stared the green peppers and tomatoes in April. Once they got bigger I thought maybe they would enjoy being outdoors a little when it was nice. Big mistake, the sun fried the tomatoes. Then I decided to start the cukes, zucchini, broccoli, lettuce, and beans so I could get a jump on the season. Well, its just been a week and these seeds are going crazy! One day after school I looked at them and then at bedtime they were at least an inch taller, HONEST! I have been waiting to get our fence up to plant them outside. I'm really not into lanting rabbit food if you know what I mean. The pictures are of my youngest and biggest seedlings. I'm pretty sure that I could just sit and actually watch them grow! They are growing that fast!

Yum! All that fresh food sounds wonderful! It also just sounds like a lot more work. I bet it is a lot of fun for the boys to watch the garden grow too. Enjoy! Molly

So I had a garden, if that is what you want to call it, last year. I planted sugar snap peas, green beans, rhubarb, cucumbers, carrots, and broccoli. I was able to harvest the peas and beans, but the rest was a disaster. And....Riley enjoyed the bunnies!! We had a few fatalities last year!!! I tried to shrink my garden this year as I do not have a good space for it in my yard. Riley has already dug in my little planter boxes and up rooted my seeds of peppers, beans and peas. I think I am going to just make a point to go to the farmers market on Saturdays. Your pre-garden work looks great! How did you wrap your seeds?? Kate

You are industrious! I am hoping that a few of those delicious vegetables will find their way into my kitchen, if the rabbits don't eat it all. Aunt Mary would be proud of her fledgling gardener.
